A New Way of Being
Astrology is a language of symbols, an alphabet if you like, which when understood, gives access into our past, present and possible future ways of thinking, acting and being. If how we act to situations in the present is governed by how we have acted and reacted in the past then it stands to reason how we act or react in the present will largely determine what our future responses to any given situation are likely to be. It seems very much as if rather than having a predetermined future thrust upon us from some sort of outside force or divine being we do in fact have free will to first think and act as we like and also to change how we think and act.
Imagine if every time you came in contact with a certain person the contact resulted in an exchange of anger or, on the other side, a very pleasant afternoon of whatever takes you’re fancy. Pretty soon, if those encounters are repeated often enough, they will become habits and a pattern of responses will be set up. This is pretty much how we act or react to the encounters life brings our way. It’s like building up our very own personal library of responses. Whenever we find ourselves in a known situation we open one of the books of responses from the library and act out according to what is written in the book or how we have conditioned ourselves to react. The same is true of being in unknown situations, we bring out the book dealing with unknowns and act according to how we have conditioned our self to act in the past. This library is our memory of past events and meditation based on the birth chart can give us the keys to explore the library and discover new ways of being.
The Ego
The planets Sun/Moon/Saturn form the part of our consciousness we refer to as the ego, our sense of self.
Sun is the “I am” the idea of our inner hero, a real live superman or woman. Moon represents our emotional responses. It tells us how our hero reacts to other people and how it feels about our hero. Saturn is the mechanism tasked with keeping our hero safe and secure, the inner voice of caution. When our conditioned responses become habitual we have trouble in responding in a truly free and open manner.
Meditation on the birth chart is a way in which it becomes possible to understand and gain an awareness of some of the unhelpful habitual response mechanisms we employ. The meditation given here is written very much from the Huber method of drawing a birth chart. This method relies on simplicity and the use of colour to stimulate the meditative side of our nature. I would recommend spending a little time becoming familiar with the positions of the planets and the coloured aspect lines that connect them to one another. Remember a little practice and time spent becoming familiar with the meditation and your chart will repay itself many times over.

Birth Chart Meditation
1 Sit and orientate yourself with your head in heaven and your feet well anchored to the earth. See yourself growing roots from your feet down into the earth and become aware of these roots grounding you into and onto the earth. Feel supported by the energy of the universe gently stretching your neck and spine up to heaven and the energy of the earth gently pulling your legs and feet down into the ground.
2 Breathe in and out through the nose filling the lungs and becoming aware of the chest rising and falling. Falling with the inhalation and rising with the exhalation. As the breath comes in think “I am breathing” and smell the scent of a rose.
3 Focus your consciousness in the head and let it sink slowly into the centre of your head, through the jaw, neck and into the upper chest, where you point to when you say “I”. In this central point you see a white gold sun shining: allow yourself to sink slowly into this light as it surrounds you, where you are protected and at peace. Symbolically you are now in the circle at the centre of the horoscope. Fill this space as much as you can with your sense of self
4 Visualise your horoscope around you, looking left see the AC with its sign, then look right and see the DC with its sign. Below is the I.C. and above is the M.C. In this cross you feel strong and secure. This is the cross of matter, from here you reach out to others across the axis of encounter (A.C.-D.C.). Vertically is the axis of individuality where the individual rises up from the collective (D.C.) to the height of the individual existence (M.C.) Give some thought as to how you reach out and contact others and also what it is or how it is you would like to grow into and become.
5 As you find yourself sitting in the inner circle of your birth chart start to visualise the ego planets: Sun
, Moon
and Saturn
, arranged as they are in your chart.
First turn your attention to the Sun: bring it in close and examine how you feel about your thoughts on your sense of self. Understand you are the most important being in your world……… see yourself as strong and capable to overcome anything which life sends your way.
After a while push it slowly back into its original place and bring in the Moon. Examine how you feel about your emotional nature. Ask yourself if your emotions are under your control…… are you giving freely of yourself or do you resent the demands placed upon you. Whatever and however you feel imagine yourself in control of your emotional state and see yourself giving freely to others and able to accept help and support when you need it. Then slowly restore the Moon to its original position.
Now do the same with Saturn, examining how you feel about what this planet represents to you. Saturn is the planet of boundaries and walls between yourself and others. It is what keeps us safe and secure. It is the memory of all that has happened to us ….. good and bad. Become aware of the power of this energy and as you do realise it is to be utilised and used for your protection but does not have to be the ruling force in your life.
6 When you wish to withdraw from the state of meditation or contemplation start to become aware of your breathing, breathing deeper with each breath and as you become more aware of the sounds around you slowly open your eyes and focus your attention on your surroundings. Sit in this space of conscious awareness for a few more breaths and then go through any closing procedure you use.
This meditation is based on that given by Bruno & Louise Huber in their book Transformation: Astrology As A Spiritual Path, and is included here with the permission of the Publisher HopeWell.
